The goal of this blog is to share stories of both our adventures and Ukrainian life with our friends and family. By blogging, we are able to share with everyone at the same time and are able to fulfill the third goal of the Peace Corps: “to help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.”

Why serve?

Chris: The Peace Corp has a commitment to provide men and women in our global community with needed training, this is a huge part of why I want to partner with them. I think it is important to engage in experiences that stretch me, and to do that through learning how to best serve people. I expect that while working alongside people from different backgrounds and cultures, there will be opportunities to grow personally and professionally. Much of that growth may happen through the challenges that are unique to international work, and overcoming those challenges through accepting help from those around me, as well as learning how to best plan for when things don’t work out as expected.

Jessica: I want to serve in the Peace Corps because I have teaching skills that I want to put to use, and a passion for building relationships with people. Serving in the Peace Corps gives me the opportunity to utilize my education experience, build relationships with people, and indulge in my desire to travel and experience life in a new community abroad. I teach English, and I believe that the value of education is that it empowers people to make change in their own lives by teaching both concrete English language skills, and critical thinking skills. And, I believe that educators are at their best when they have relationships with the individuals, and thus communities they are serving. Peace Corps, with its emphasis on language learning, community involvement, and cultural exchange facilitates that. And thus it also facilitates the type of travel that I desire. Yes, I want to experience new places, but it is because I want to engage in the type of cultural exchange the Peace Corps encourages.

What is Peace Corps?

The Peace Corps is an organization funded by the federal government and started by JFK in the ’60s. It is a service opportunity, sending thousands of Americans abroad each year to countries around the world, and they commit to serve in new communities for 27 months.

The goal of Peace Corps is to promote world peace and friendship by fulfilling three goals:

  1. To help the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women.
  2. To help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served.
  3. To help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.

To help meet these goals, Peace Corps provides trainees with an intense three months of language and cultural training (Pre-Service Training, or PST). After PST, volunteers are sent to their placement sites where they will serve alongside host country nationals on local projects.

For the two of us, we chose to serve with Peace Corps because we wanted the community integration it facilitates and because it didn’t require that we raise our own support funds.
